In a significant political development, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has officially dismissed Lynda Tabuya from her role as the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection in Fiji's Coalition Government.

The decision follows the emergence of a widely circulated nude video involving Ms. Tabuya, which surfaced on Tuesday and has since sparked considerable public attention.

Sashi Kiran Named Successor

In a statement released by Mr. Rabuka, he announced that Sashi Kiran would take over as the new Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection. Her appointment will take effect upon her swearing-in as the substantive minister by His Excellency, the President.

A Difficult Yet Necessary Decision

Mr. Rabuka emphasized that removing Ms. Tabuya from her ministerial position was not a decision taken lightly. However, he stated that the move was necessary to uphold the standards and integrity expected of government ministers.

“This is not a decision I have taken lightly, but one that is necessary in the best interest of the people that we serve,” Mr. Rabuka said.

While Ms. Tabuya will no longer serve as a minister, she will retain her role as a Member of Parliament.

Constitutional Grounds for Dismissal

The Prime Minister cited Section 92(3)(b) of the Constitution as the basis for his authority to dismiss Ms. Tabuya. He explained that her recent actions were inconsistent with the oath of office she had taken as a minister and the ethical standards required for her role.

“In light of the recent events concerning the conduct of Ms. Tabuya and in consideration of the Oath she has taken as a Minister, the standards expected of any Minister make this decision valid,” Mr. Rabuka stated.

Implications for Governance

The incident has sparked widespread discussions about privacy, ethics, and the responsibilities of public officials in maintaining public trust. As the Coalition Government transitions to new leadership in the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, all eyes will be on Sashi Kiran as she assumes this critical role.

This development underscores the challenges faced by public figures in balancing personal and professional conduct while serving in high-stakes roles of governance.
